Missed the point. You're wrong too, A-Net could ban for that. Freedom of speech isn't what you think it is, you think it is this:
Quote:
You want freedom of speech but you don't want to hear the things that people hate? Err ok, that doesn't make much sense. Freedom of speech meaning everyone gets a chance to say their opinion, but but conflicts occur because difference of opinion?
|
Freedom of speech is about politics.
Quote:
The Straw Man fallacy is committed when a person simply ignores a person's actual position and substitutes a distorted, exaggerated or misrepresented version of that position. This sort of "reasoning" has the following pattern:
1. Person A has position X.
2. Person B presents position Y (which is a distorted version of X).
3. Person B attacks position Y.
4. Therefore X is false/incorrect/flawed.
This sort of "reasoning" is fallacious because attacking a distorted version of a position simply does not constitute an attack on the position itself. One might as well expect an attack on a poor drawing of a person to hurt the person.

As far as Sega goes, what kind of non-italian speaker is going to know that is a curse word in that language? I actually learned this when Arsenal were sponsored by Sega and would actually have Dreamcast on their shirt when playing in the Champions League... I can't imagine a lot of people will know this, it doesn't warrent a ban, it warrents a warning.
I would recommend people stop being gestapo dipshits and not report offensive names, the name filter covers anything genuinely offensive, hell you can't even have "suck" in your name - if you are offended by Azz you should probably /wrist or at the very least get off the internet
|
Couldnt agree with you more. This report function will never be used by me. Im' not going to do the job that anets name filters are to crappy to do. If the name filter doesnt catch it then chances are that any negative meaning is going to be given by the reader. Not the actual definition of the word.... and that's what should matter. You can argue that Azz should be reported, but a name with SEGA in it? COMEON! I have 2 Sega's in my living room, and I play with them all the time.
And by the way. Anet. I find the word Yakslapper to be very offensive. Could you tell me how to report anet for offensive language?

What if you made a character Ass Zhed . He is kind of a horse, would that be offensive? We don't say 'Ass' in England and America is not the world, interesting indeed. If you say it quickly it might sound like arsed though.

IIRC, from the previous posts, it's an offensive word in Italian. Don't know what would be the equivalent in English though.
(Totally off topic, but I wonder if the name affected sales in Italy?)

The second one stops looking at her belly button as the center (or "centre" in British English ) of the world, one discovers the wonders of the world, its languages, its cultures, things that go beyond one's selfish opinion of what is and what should be.
There is a good reason for the measures that Anet is taking. You cannot have fun at the expense of others, even when you believe it is harmless. It may "just" be a word to you, but it may be something completely different to many other players.

Has anyone pointed out that ass actually means donkey?
Yeah, it does mean arse now, and why has that got red dots underneath it, and Shakespeare does use word play in a Midsummer's Night Dream, when Nick Bottom transforms into a donkey.
OT:
It's a game, and he didn't even spell ass correctly, some people are seriously sheltered.

max, do you need a reply or was that a rhetorical question (post)?
You KNOW that the staff at anet is only working on gw2 so the let the masses (input age derogative term here) do reporting now.....
we have mentioned before that putting guns in the hands of children is a bad thing---letting other players decide upon your characters names is also a bad thing.

we are letting others decide our names, i have written to ncsoft / anet about name violations i received, including my latest... their reply "we don't argue / have conversations about a character name. if someone reported it as offensive, then they must find it offensive, therefore you must change it." that my friends, is a load of crap! you cannot defend your actions? just as people are seeing / experiencing with the moving money between accounts, anet / ncsoft doesn't care to hear why, just take your ban and live with it, that is the support they are offering now...
guilty till proven innocent? with no defense aloud... so you are just found guilty on reasons of someone doesn't like you?

You are complaining that a.net gave you a temporary ban for what is clearly a juvenile name? It couldn't be kiwi or orange or mango. You had to go with the one with the obvious sexual connotation. Your suspension was inevitable and you knew it.

I'm sorry, but what the hell has cherry, or any other fruit for that matter, go to do with a sexual connotation? If anything, that's more a case of some over-sensitive pleb having an hyper-active dirty mind and finding offence in anything and everything.

hey, where in the EULA does it say i am responsible for what others think? nowhere exactly.... it doesnt say "put your mind in the gutter..." no it doesnt... you know there are many children / younger players who saw my cherry name, and had no idea it was dirty at all... that is my point... i am not responsible for what ppl have run threw their minds... my name was 100% not offensive... people take things the wrong way and i get in trouble...
well, Gaile Gray is offenive... Gale = loud / strong outburst, Gray = old... is the game for only loud old ppl.... well maybe that is why people stopped buying the game, cause they felt insulted by the spokes person for the game...
my point is anything and everything could be offensive, and since you cannot defend yourself, i would expect everyone to get some ban at some point... maybe i should log in now and just report everyone everywhere...

They are giving support, not to you but to the one offended by the name you chose. What's so essential about this name anyway? Is it more than 10% of the fun you take in the game? Can't you just find another one more appropriate? (please, stop invoking your "rights" and the "law", this is a game offered by Anet, not a state, they choose the policy and you're free to comply or leave)
I wonder if (it may not be your case) people complaining so fiercely about a ban because of an inappropriate name are annoyed or if they simply contest the principle. It's strange that people want the game to be so different from real life (it has to be, but only up to a certain point), no one would accept names like these in real life, would they? Who wants to call someone (virtual or not) "I hate boobs"?

If you disagree with this decision and point the EULA, you should probably sue Anet!
You may not be responsible for how others perceive this name, but you should be responsible for understanding that the statement "my name was 100% not offensive" is plain wrong. It's like the above comment on "Sega", look at the link I provided.

You're looking for an excuse here. It's probably her name and herself (not an electronic avatar or a virtual character that can be deleted in a matter of seconds) that you're (almost) insulting.

No, not everything can be offensive, for example proper names! It's quite amasing that you fail to understand this!

Sometimes I think people like this just don't "get it." If you are age 18-28 in the US, you OBVIOUSLY see the sexual connotation with that phrase.

In Azagoth's defense, he is from the UK, and might not understand the sexual meaning of the term "I Stole Joras Cherry" as a name. But anybody living in the US not still being bottle fed would probably take bets on when a name like that will end up getting the user a suspension.
